00:01:01:24 00:01:08:00 We felt like we weren’t doing anything. Did you see everything that was going on there? 00:01:08:09 00:01:13:13 We didn’t have enough time nor enough hands nor enough of anything to handle it all. 00:01:14:08 00:01:20:19 We left a part of ourselves in Haiti. All of us left something in Haiti. 00:01:21:17 00:01:28:03 I have been a fireman for 30 years and I could not imagine failing a rescue mission. 00:01:29:01 00:01:34:07 With Redji’s rescue we shared a moment of euphoria and joy. But there were so many 00:01:34:18 00:01:39:19 moments when you were drowning in misery. 00:01:40:08 00:01:46:19 Those were the moments that made us more than teammates to one another. 00:01:51:02 00:01:54:22 GAELLE 00:02:05:05 00:02:10:02 GEBOCYL is a group of specialized fire-rescue workers from the Castilla y Leon region in Spain. 00:02:10:12 00:02:16:06 It consists of five intervention units: Mountain, Cave, Underwater, and Collapsed Building rescue. 00:02:16:14 00:02:23:12 Within the Collapsed Building unit there is the Canine unit. 00:02:25:15 00:02:31:02 Turco and Topy belong to our team. They are essential, because they are the ones who locate the victim. 00:02:31:10 00:02:35:05 If they do not locate the victim, we cannot save them. 00:02:36:01 00:02:41:05 Turco is not just any dog, since he was found in very bad conditions. 00:02:41:15 00:02:47:09 Nowadays he is one of the best rescue dogs in the world. 00:02:50:06 00:02:56:10 Cristina was Turco’s first owner. She is in the military, and while she was stationed in Tarifa 00:02:56:18 00:03:04:20 her colleges found him. They mentioned the dog to her and she decided to keep him. 00:03:05:12 00:03:09:20 He was full of fleas and very skinny. 00:03:10:06 00:03:14:00 He had been beaten and someone had tried to cut the microchip out of his neck. 00:03:14:12 00:03:19:19 She took him to the veterinarian where he got a new microchip, they gave him a flea-bath, 00:03:20:04 00:03:23:18 they treated his wounds and Cristina took him home with her. 00:03:24:03 00:03:30:01 I heard through my teammate Raul that this dog had a particular don for rescue 00:03:30:11 00:03:36:22 and we went to do a little test on him and see. And that´s how Turco ended up with us. 00:03:38:09 00:03:42:08 Once we were able to make him bark again we started his training. 00:03:42:20 00:03:48:23 He went to Ecuador with Paco to an international rescue dog-training course in the Arcon method. 00:03:51:16 00:03:59:02 Turco was certified to be a rescue dog in October and the earthquake happened in January. 00:04:00:09 00:04:06:20 So he just came back from his Arcon training, and the earthquake was in January. 00:04:09:13 00:04:15:17 January of 2010, the earth shook at your feet... Haiti! 00:04:16:06 00:04:22:17 Death struck you at the heart, roots and bones grew.... 00:04:24:14 00:04:30:13 I was told by "Firefighters Without Borders" that there had been an earthquake in Haiti. 00:04:30:23 00:04:38:00 That´s when it all began. We had to be prepared by noon the day after the earthquake. 00:04:39:06 00:04:44:07 We got ready so fast that there wasn’t a plane ready for us when we arrived at the airport. 00:04:44:16 00:04:48:04 The situation was a bit chaotic. 00:04:48:15 00:04:54:15 Finally they brought us the president’s plane, which couldn’t carry all our equipment. 00:04:55:02 00:05:00:17 We could only carry 1000 kg so we only took the bare minimum of equipment. 00:05:01:06 00:05:06:23 With the seven of us we each brought our personal backpacks, the two dogs, and nothing else. 00:05:07:09 00:05:12:14 When we arrived in Santo Domingo we were told that Haiti was still designated a no-fly-zone. 00:05:12:24 00:05:18:23 At Port-Au-Prince we had to fly around for a very long time, til’ we finally got permission for landing. 00:05:19:10 00:05:24:09 We nearly had to return to Santo Domingo, because we were running out of fuel. 00:05:24:17 00:05:28:10 We were all so impatient and nervous at the thought of having come so close and 00:05:29:14 00:05:33:10 having to return to Santo Domingo. In the last moment they gave us permission to land. 00:05:33:23 00:05:36:05 Looking down it looked as though there had been a bombing. 00:05:36:12 00:05:40:16 The mountains looked like they had been scratched by a giant shovel. 00:05:40:24 00:05:43:24 There were parts which were of a different whiter color, from the earthquake. 00:05:44:10 00:05:47:15 It was incredible. And then when you saw it all right in front of you… 00:05:48:09 00:05:53:18 You walk through the streets and start seeing so many collapsed buildings, so much poverty, 00:05:54:01 00:05:57:07 so many dead people on the ground and on the sidewalk… 00:05:57:18 00:06:01:19 you see people walk around the corpses or jump over them, but nobody removes them. 00:06:02:04 00:06:04:21 Very rarely could you see a building that was still standing. 00:06:05:05 00:06:07:22 Everything else had fallen, was collapsed or destroyed. 00:06:08:06 00:06:12:14 And all the people trapped in those buildings, we saw so many... 00:06:12:23 00:06:17:01 I have never seen something like that 00:06:17:10 00:06:21:05 The expression on people’s faces of total loss that seemed to say, 00:06:21:12 00:06:24:02 “What do we do now?” 00:06:24:11 00:06:30:03 So much pain, and so much sorrow. We felt so powerless, too. 00:06:30:11 00:06:36:22 You say to yourself, I am nothing but a grain of sand in the desert. 00:06:37:06 00:06:42:21 So many people who need help, and I can hardly do anything. Astonishing! 00:06:44:15 00:06:47:22 The airport is your first contact with reality. 00:06:48:07 00:06:53:04 The air traffic control tower had fallen down and the runway was cracked. 00:06:53:15 00:06:58:03 The airport was controlled by the US Army who had dug a trench 00:06:58:14 00:07:00:21 two soldiers were sitting there with a walky-talky. This was the new control tower. 00:07:01:09 00:07:03:23 The change of temperature was brutal. 00:07:04:15 00:07:09:06 The day before we had been doing a rescue dog training in a dump, where it had been snowing. 00:07:09:17 00:07:14:17 This change of temperature, the long flight, the lack of food, 00:07:14:24 00:07:21:14 being in his transport cage, all this caused a huge stress on the dogs. 00:07:23:03 00:07:25:11 As soon as we arrived at the airport, our 00:07:25:19 00:07:31:13 Canine Unit was asked to accompany a rescue team from Iceland to a supermarket. 00:07:31:22 00:07:37:14 We saved there a 20-something year old girl in a very complicated rescue mission. 00:07:37:21 00:07:43:19 The job of the dogs was to identify other victims that were still alive in the building. 00:07:44:04 00:07:49:10 Our dogs signaled that there were more people alive inside of the supermarket. 00:07:49:20 00:07:55:01 In order to avoid an error of the dogs, though we believe that such an error 00:07:55:11 00:07:59:11 does not exist when using the Arcon method, a dog from a different unit was sent. 00:07:59:18 00:08:02:21 A dog trained in the Arcon method either does or does not locate a person alive. 00:08:03:04 00:08:08:00 This dog from the Civil Protection Unit did not bark and this spread doubts. 00:08:08:09 00:08:13:16 We sent in a dog from our unit again, who signaled the same thing again and again, 00:08:14:04 00:08:20:15 Then a US rescue team came, who ruled out all possibility that there was anyone alive. 00:08:21:15 00:08:27:07 But we were 100% positive that our dog had located and that there were people alive there. 00:08:27:16 00:08:30:14 Even the girl who had been rescued told us 00:08:30:21 00:08:34:13 that she had been talking to somebody inside the supermarket. 00:08:34:23 00:08:39:13 The people started to get upset when they saw the Icelandic rescue team leave 00:08:39:22 00:08:42:02 and we had no choice but to leave as well. 00:08:42:08 00:08:47:10 If we had not been separated from our rescue group, we would have stayed there to work. 00:08:47:20 00:08:51:19 We would have entered somehow to see if there was anybody left alive. 00:08:52:18 00:08:58:00 The earthquake had taken place when the schools and universities were full of people. 00:08:58:11 00:09:03:03 So many people died. In all of the rescue missions we came across dead people. 00:09:03:18 00:09:10:00 There was an awful smell. You could tell there were dead people especially 00:09:10:07 00:09:17:11 when the dogs would enter a building. You can see it the dog’s attitude. 00:09:18:24 00:09:26:15 When they locate a person alive they are excited and move their tail. 00:09:27:01 00:09:32:23 When they smell a dead person they have their tail hanging down. 00:09:36:02 00:09:44:18 A man told us that they had found a girl who was screaming. 00:09:45:06 00:09:49:11 The girl had been buried inside a building, which had been a hotel. 00:09:49:20 00:09:54:03 The upper floors had not collapsed, just the lower part. 00:09:54:15 00:09:58:19 The top floor was still intact but it was very unstable. 00:09:59:21 00:10:05:00 US army helicopters flew by and the vibrations made the building move. 00:10:05:09 00:10:08:17 It was a complicated rescue. 00:10:10:02 00:10:15:04 We started to clear away rubble and saw that it was a young girl. 00:10:15:14 00:10:21:11 When we uncovered her head we started to talk to her and we gave her water. 00:10:23:07 00:10:26:10 Finally we had partially freed her. 00:10:26:21 00:10:32:24 During the whole procedure, which took a long time, we saw her life-force ebbing away. 00:10:33:08 00:10:39:02 In the beginning she talked to us and she was conscious when we moved her. 00:10:40:09 00:10:44:15 During one of the my turns I heard shooting but I did not pay much attention to it. 00:10:44:23 00:10:51:20 We were told that a jail nearby had collapsed, prisoners had escaped and that they were armed. 00:10:52:05 00:11:00:00 Our escort told us that we could not let these people reach us and ordered us to leave. 00:11:00:14 00:11:11:02 The Canadian policemen who were in charge of our security believed that our lives and theirs were at risk. 00:11:11:17 00:11:19:12 We became hysteric, we said, “Quickly, we have to get her out somehow”. 00:11:20:01 00:11:26:17 We all started clearing rubble and tried to gain time to free her in whatever way possible. 00:11:27:11 00:11:32:00 She was fading from us. Sometimes she closed her eyes. 00:11:32:10 0:11:42:06 We had the feeling that she was dying. Suddenly, the escort screamed at us: "Out, Out, Out!!" 00:11:42:17 00:11:48:00 They told us it was her life or ours and that it was ours that we had to save 00:11:48:09 00:11:50:06 and everybody had to get out. 00:11:50:19 00:11:56:18 I thought, “If they needed 100 bodyguards, then bring them”, but I couldn’t leave her there. 00:11:57:04 00:12:01:18 You can imagine that a victim might die on you during a rescue mission. 00:12:02:01 00:12:07:15 But you can’t fathom abandoning somebody while they are still alive. 00:12:08:01 00:12:18:04 This was really hard for us. We started to leave, Raul and I were the last ones. 00:12:18:16 00:12:23:03 We looked at her, and had the feeling that she understood that 00:12:23:11 00:12:27:07 we were leaving her behind… and that’s was true. 00:12:27:21 00:12:36:05 When they drove us away we were all crying out of desperation and powerlessness, 00:12:36:17 00:12:43:08 having left this girl and knowing that no one would save her. 00:12:44:06 00:12:50:22 When we were leaving we saw that all of the rescue teams nearby were being evacuated, 00:12:51:05 00:12:55:01 it was a caravan of rescue teams leaving. 00:12:58:00 00:13:09:01 We had asked a doctor to evaluate her, to get rid of the feeling that we had left her behind, alive. 00:13:09:13 00:13:16:21 No doctor dared to enter the building and we left with a feeling of bitterness and sorrow, 00:13:17:06 00:13:23:02 which I don’t think any of us will ever forget. 00:13:23:14 00:13:32:11 I remember this moment every single day… and I imagine the others do too. 00:13:32:21 00:13:40:12 We left a part of ourselves there. All of us left a part of ourselves there. 00:13:50:22 00:13:54:22 We left the airport and headed towards the university. 00:13:55:06 00:13:59:06 It was a six story building, which had collapsed like a “sandwich”, 00:13:59:16 00:14:02:21 which means that one floor collapses on top of the next. 00:14:03:01 00:14:06:17 The ceiling drops all the way to the ground. 00:14:07:00 00:14:15:03 In this kind of collapse you don’t find many survivors because it leaves no room to survive. 00:14:15:15 00:14:23:00 We had been working there and I remember it was an old man who first approached. 00:14:23:10 00:14:29:22 He was a bit shaken, but was very polite, "Sorry to disturb you. Can you come over here? 00:14:30:07 00:14:32:16 We can hear there is a little boy crying." 00:14:33:00 00:14:35:18 We promised to accompany him once we had finished. 00:14:36:01 00:14:41:01 Then a woman came. She was nervous and angry: "There’s a little child! 00:14:41:09 00:14:47:01 Stop wasting your time here! Get him out!" that´s when we started to take them seriously. 00:14:47:16 00:14:53:06 Everyone was telling you their story to make you go to their homes and find their families. 00:14:53:13 00:15:00:24 But you have to give priority to the buildings where you may find more people alive. 00:15:01:07 00:15:05:16 There were so many people who told you that they had heard somebody… 00:15:05:24 00:15:10:01 They did everything they could to make you search for their relatives. 00:15:10:08 00:15:16:24 When we finished, we decided to go to this house where they heard the little boy just to make sure. 00:15:22:13 00:15:26:08 As soon as we got there we could hear him. 00:15:26:17 00:15:33:21 It was like the soft whisper of a little cat below the rubble. 00:15:34:19 00:15:39:20 Their family home had totally collapsed. 00:15:40:03 00:15:45:07 A two story house was left flat, it seemed as if there had never been any house there. 00:15:45:18 00:15:49:14 We didn’t have any tools or equipment. 00:15:49:24 00:15:54:09 So we took advantage of the position of the rubble in order to dig a tunnel. 00:15:54:19 00:16:02:08 We just had our hands, our strength and hammer they had been working with there. 00:16:02:19 00:16:09:02 Later they brought us a hacksaw. You had to see that hacksaw! 00:16:09:14 00:16:14:23 We started chiseling away the rubble, the rubble thats holding everything up, 00:16:15:05 00:16:20:18 so everything moves, the whole place was shaking, and we were inside! 00:16:21:02 00:16:26:20 Then a two person team from Belgium arrived, but they were a bit disoriented. 00:16:27:05 00:16:29:15 They had heavy duty tools that we didn’t have. 00:16:29:22 00:16:33:11 At one point we thought that there was no way to get through all the rubble. 00:16:33:22 00:16:39:17 So they went into the tunnel but they came out immediately. "You’re crazy!” 00:16:39:24 00:16:42:03 “You can´t get through here!" 00:16:42:11 00:16:46:14 So they went on top of the collapsed building and used their tools to calculate 00:16:46:22 00:16:53:02 the position of the child and said: "Here is his head! We’ll dig a hole here." 00:16:53:09 00:16:58:16 We told them "No!, We’ll continue working in the tunnel, step by step, 00:16:59:00 00:17:02:21 because we think we’ll be able to do things safer this way.” 00:17:07:04 00:17:10:22 When we were in the middle of clearing away rubble, there was an aftershock. 00:17:11:02 00:17:16:06 All we thought of was getting out as fast as possible, in case everything fell down. 00:17:16:12 00:17:19:19 The entrance to the tunnel was so small that we had gone in one by one. 00:17:20:01 00:17:22:05 But this time the three of us got out of there all at once! 00:17:22:13 00:17:26:18 I remember that you got up and your gloves were full of blood. I told you, 00:17:27:00 00:17:29:22 "Take off your gloves, I’m gonna give you new ones". 00:17:30:04 00:17:33:10 That’s when the earth started to tremble. 00:17:33:17 00:17:38:00 We were both standing up and could feel everything shake from head to toe. 00:17:38:06 00:17:41:23 We held each other so hard that we ended up with bruises on our arms. 00:17:42:05 00:17:45:09 “What was that?” We were so nervous. 00:17:45:14 00:17:49:13 Then, just like in a cartoon, our three team-mates came out of the hole, bop, bop, bop, 00:17:49:20 00:17:53:22 white as ghosts with a look on their face like, "What is happening here?" It was an aftershock. 00:17:54:07 00:17:57:24 From time to time you could hear the little boy crying. He shouted, he groaned. 00:17:58:04 00:18:06:10 You can imagine, a 2 year old kid, who has been buried for 50 hours. 00:18:06:19 00:18:12:19 I have often tried to imagine myself in his situation. 00:18:13:03 00:18:17:17 I imagine myself buried below the rubble in the darkness, 00:18:18:01 00:18:24:09 with nothing to eat or drink for 50 hours and lying next to me is my dead grandfather. 00:18:24:17 00:18:30:19 This situation must have a profound psycological effect on anybody and 00:18:31:03 00:18:34:03 any of us would have gone to pieces. 00:18:34:10 00:18:38:11 But the little boy was so determined to live. 00:18:38:18 00:18:44:15 He smiled at us from the very beginning, he reached his arms out to us. He was so adorable! 00:18:45:01 00:18:51:21 We went in through a hole that was so small that I could only get one arm, 00:18:52:04 00:18:56:17 my head and part of my body in... it was a really narrow hole. 00:18:57:07 00:19:05:19 Felix’s helmet went in scraping the beam and the floor, you could hear it scrapping. 00:19:06:04 00:19:13:21 The whole structure was supported by a wooden chair and one leg of a table... 00:19:14:06 00:19:20:15 We think that during the earthquake the grandfather took his grandson 00:19:21:00 00:19:23:06 and got underneath the table. 00:19:23:16 00:19:27:19 When everything collapsed just one of the table’s legs stayed upright. 00:19:28:02 00:19:33:08 So together with the chair, the leg of the table and the body of the dead grandfather 00:19:33:13 00:19:39:07 who was still holding his grandson in his arms, there was enough space for the little boy to survive. 00:19:39:16 00:19:46:06 There was no room for anything else. I still don’t know how I squeezed in. 00:19:46:14 00:19:52:05 I had to exhale all the air out of my lungs to make myself smaller to be able to slip in. 00:19:52:11 00:19:56:07 I remember this moment every day. If it weren’t for this extreme situation I would not have entered. 00:19:56:19 00:20:03:22 And you get in there with your headlamp lighting the way and see 00:20:04:06 00:20:07:23 this beautiful boy, and these two big eyes are shining back at you. 00:20:08:06 00:20:15:02 It´s as if a treasure hunter suddenly finds a huge treasure. 00:20:15:10 00:20:19:24 The first thing I tried was to grab him and get him out. But I couldn't. 00:20:20:07 00:20:27:15 I tried for a while, but I couldn’t get him out just then. 00:20:27:23 00:20:32:10 But I knew that we would rescue this boy. I knew he was going to get out. 00:20:32:21 00:20:36:06 I touched him. He was fine. I could give him water. 00:20:36:13 00:20:42:16 He drank it with his little hands like it was medicine. The water dripped all over. 00:20:42:24 00:20:48:14 My goodness...I will never forget the time I spent inside there with him. 00:20:48:21 00:20:53:09 I often see him in my dreams and I get very emotional talking about the boy, 00:20:53:15 00:20:56:24 and about this experience... it was a difficult moment. 00:20:57:08 00:21:00:03 You have to imagine the situation the whole country is in. 00:21:00:10 00:21:02:11 you’re thinking about your teammates outside... 00:21:02:17 00:21:06:20 He was bent over his feet and had the crossbeam crossing his chest. 00:21:07:04 00:21:11:05 I worked carefully and finally got him free. 00:21:11:14 00:21:15:19 And he grabbed me, and held on to my arms as if to say: 00:21:16:04 00:21:17:18 you’re not leaving here without me. 00:21:18:02 00:21:21:22 It gave me goose bumps all over and I shouted to my team-mates: 00:21:22:04 00:21:24:13 "Let’s get out of here! I’ve got him". 00:21:24:19 00:21:28:09 They pulled me out by my legs, while he held onto my arms. 00:21:28:16 00:21:34:21 When I got to the beginning of the tunnel I took him into my arms and got on my feet. 00:21:35:06 0:21:40:24 That´s when everyone exploded with joy. People started singing and dancing. 00:21:41:21 00:21:46:12 They looked up to the sky, held their arms up. 00:21:46:20 00:21:51:19 They lifted me up and took off my helmet. 00:21:52:03 00:21:55:14 The parents of the little boy came and the mother screamed: "Mummy, mummy! ". 00:21:55:22 00:21:58:05 She banged her chest as if to say, "I’m the mother!" 00:21:58:14 00:22:01:18 Everybody wanted to hug and kiss him. 00:22:02:02 00:22:09:10 We felt as if he was our child, as if we had given him life. 00:22:10:02 00:22:18:24 The whole world was watching you, the whole world’s heart was with you... 00:22:20:13 00:22:27:07 Once we were back in Spain we were whisked back to a world which has nothing to do with Haiti. 00:22:27:17 00:22:36:14 It was as if we had had a dream, which the media made us repeat again an again. 00:22:39:08 00:22:41:15 It was difficult for us to disconnect. 00:22:42:16 00:22:47:05 Everyone called you a hero, but you just feel like a firefighter. 00:22:47:14 00:22:51:15 I feel like a firefighter, who had gone and done his job. 00:22:52:01 00:22:57:13 We were able to be successful in our mission. But it just as well could have been unsuccessful. 00:22:58:10 00:23:04:03 I am just a firefighter, that´s what I have always wanted to be... 00:23:09:08 00:23:12:12 One year later… 00:23:20:19 00:23:25:16 On this journey back to Haiti we wanted to search for Redji, we were thrilled at the idea 00:23:26:02 00:23:30:12 of finding him and his family and seeing what kind of situation he’s in. 00:23:30:20 00:23:36:01 You rescue a person, but you cannot imagine that you might meet this person again. 00:23:37:08 00:23:44:17 Redji’s rescue, a part from the joy that rescuing a little boy brings you, 00:23:45:03 00:23:51:19 it gave meaning to all the years of efforts, all the dog training we had done, 00:23:52:02 00:23:55:18 We had chosen a training method for dogs, the ARCON method, 00:23:56:00 00:24:02:00 which we needed to evaluate in a real life situation. 00:24:03:06 00:24:09:12 Especially in such a powerful reality with so many rescue missions. 00:24:21:22 00:24:26:19 In one rescue mission we were forced to abandon a girl alive for security reasons 00:24:27:06 00:24:30:15 and that experience has marked us for life. 00:24:31:02 00:24:36:18 Upon return to Spain, our lives were forever changed by the experience in Haiti. 00:24:37:01 00:24:43:17 I have worked for 30 years as a fireman and I could not imagine that I might fail in a rescue mission. 00:24:44:07 00:24:48:19 Even though we consider it a failure in an extreme situation, this failure, 00:24:49:03 00:24:52:18 having to abandon the victim was terrible for us. 00:24:53:02 00:24:59:22 Some of us, myself included, still don’t sleep well. We were very much affected psychologically. 00:25:00:07 00:25:04:14 We didn’t get help from psychologists and I think we should have. 00:25:05:02 00:25:11:15 It meant a radical change in our lives, in the way we understand rescue missions 00:25:11:22 00:25:14:21 and in the way we understand the lives of rescuers. 00:25:20:22 00:25:25:08 I need to find closure, I need to go to the place where we had to abandon the rescue of the girl. 00:25:28:13 00:25:31:23 We had been there for 10 brutally intense days, 00:25:32:21 00:25:36:16 and I believe the Haitians adapted to the situation better than us. 00:25:37:01 00:25:41:20 Where do they get this strength to get through this? How do they get used to it?... 00:25:42:04 00:25:48:23 Its a country that has gone through so much hardship and so much poverty, that they know 00:25:49:07 00:25:54:03 how to get through challenges, and they must be saying, here’s just one more… 00:25:56:07 00:26:00:07 They have a different philosophy of life. In the streets you see so many dead people. 00:26:00:16 00:26:03:15 I have never seen that many dead people in my life. It was difficult not to see them. 00:26:04:06 00:26:11:21 After 8 days we could still see them. We did not get used to it, but they could be sitting 00:26:12:04 00:26:17:19 in the street on a sofa and be eating and four meters from them there was a corpse. 00:26:18:03 00:26:22:22 They get used to it, you don’t, but they have a different philosophy of life. 00:26:23:07 00:26:27:09 You could see a line of people, which was maybe a kilometer long. 00:26:27:17 00:26:31:12 At the end, when you arrive with your convoy, there was nothing. 00:26:31:21 00:26:40:03 Maybe there had been a water delivery van, which had gone. They stayed there in case it came back. 00:26:40:17 00:26:45:08 And we complain? We were struck with humility. 00:26:45:17 00:26:50:16 We have too many things, we don’t have any right to complain about anything. 00:26:51:02 00:26:55:02 You take the mobile phone or the internet away from a kid these days and 00:26:55:09 00:26:57:18 he thinks the world will come to an end. 00:26:58:03 00:27:01:14 We live in a society in which we have everything and we still keep complaining. 00:27:01:24 00:27:07:23 There, they have nothing…nothing! They showed us what its like to have nothing at all. 00:27:08:08 00:27:13:13 We had some drinking water and gave it to the people there. We thought, 00:27:13:19 00:27:18:22 "Even if I stay here two weeks and return to my country malnourished, 00:27:19:07 00:27:23:08 I will recover in a week there." 00:27:24:00 00:27:27:22 It took us 4 hours to cross the border to Haiti. 00:27:28:06 00:27:33:13 Then we could finally let Turco out of his cage because he was very thirsty. 00:27:33:24 00:27:40:23 I think he remembered having been there before. The smell of the land, the sounds... 00:27:45:22 00:27:48:20 POLICE ACADEMY (MINUSTAH) 00:27:58:18 00:28:04:24 We rescued a little boy, whose story was known throughout the media all over the world. 00:28:05:06 00:28:11:19 We are trying to find him now. I guess that’s going to be pretty difficult? 00:28:12:02 00:28:15:01 Here in Port-Au-Prince this is a difficult task. 00:28:15:11 00:28:18:14 There are no registries? Nothing? 00:28:18:21 00:28:25:10 There must be a registry of victims rescued in hospitals where they received care, or not even that? 00:28:25:18 00:28:32:04 This is a nearly impossible task. Perhaps they have even left Port-Au-Prince. 00:28:32:11 00:28:41:02 They may have found refuge in another region. Many people, those who could, have gone. 00:28:41:13 00:28:49:20 Others have come from the province to the capital. That´s why there are so many refugee camps. 00:28:51:18 00:28:56:10 We have seen collapsed buildings and a tent in front of it. 00:28:56:18 00:29:00:14 Are these families who have decided to keep their homes? 00:29:00:24 00:29:05:03 Yes, and they cannot forget and their trauma continues. 00:29:05:11 00:29:09:12 So, you’ve been here since the earthquake? You’ve lasted since then! 00:29:09:19 00:29:14:23 How do you see the situation? I have seen it similar to when I was here, or even worse. 00:29:15:05 00:29:17:23 Very few advances have taken place... 00:29:58:00 00:30:00:07 We put this here! 00:30:10:09 00:30:13:08 We’ve come back now with medicine and toys. 00:30:13:14 00:30:18:00 But the principal idea is to resolve certain doubt of ours, 00:30:18:10 00:30:24:21 to find Redji and to find that place where we had to abandon the girl. 00:30:26:11 00:30:32:03 As well as you might fail in a police mission, something stays with you forever, 00:30:32:10 00:30:34:09 especially when someone’s life is affected. 00:30:34:16 00:30:41:22 Therefore for us it is especially important to find that place and find closure. 00:30:42:05 00:30:50:05 Someone clued us into an area called Jon Brown. It’s the extension of the Panamerican. 00:30:51:02 00:30:54:22 That’s the upper part. 00:30:55:12 00:31:02:20 We worked at the lower part of the Panamerican. It must be somewhere there. 00:31:05:18 00:31:07:23 I don´t think that more things can happen to us. 00:31:09:12 00:31:12:02 How long do you plan to stay? 00:31:12:09 00:31:13:14 Til’ friday 00:31:13:19 00:31:15:03 Friday... 00:31:15:16 00:31:17:00 Well... 00:31:18:18 00:31:20:18 Let´s see if you’re lucky and you don’t have to make a quick getaway. 00:31:21:00 00:31:23:00 Things are going to get pretty heated! 00:31:23:08 00:31:28:22 There will be riots again and you may get trapped here. 00:31:29:03 00:31:32:13 When we were in Spain, we saw that with the first elections 00:31:32:16 00:31:36:01 the situation here was pretty complicated. 00:31:36:24 00:31:40:00 The airport was closed for 4 days. 00:31:41:01 00:31:46:09 We couldn’t circulate the streets. There were barricades, protests, shootings, 00:31:49:01 00:31:51:24 broken glass, anything they could find was thrown into mix... 00:31:52:19 00:31:55:10 Now we expect the same kind of situation again. 00:31:55:16 00:31:57:22 If this happens you’ll be stuck. 00:31:58:08 00:32:00:06 In this kind of situation nobody can guarantee anyone’s safety, 00:32:00:10 00:32:03:12 not even our own. We were ordered to stay at home and wait. 00:32:03:16 00:32:04:19 Of course, just in case. 00:32:04:24 00:32:08:01 We could not leave our home. 00:35:28:17 00:35:36:08 In Port-Au-Prince there are 1300 camps with 1300000 displaced people living there. 00:35:37:04 00:35:40:20 But we do not know the name of who is living there. 00:35:41:00 00:35:44:04 So, we are in charge of the global security in the camps. 00:35:45:21 00:35:49:08 We are responsible for 7 permanent camps, but we do not know who is living there. 00:35:49:21 00:35:53:08 The camps are headed by camp chiefs and by directive committees. 00:35:54:00 00:35:59:10 It will be very difficult for you to find out who is living in the camps. 00:36:00:00 00:36:04:17 The only chance is to go from camp to camp and to ask the people. 00:36:05:03 00:36:08:24 Maybe you find somebody, who knows somebody, who knows somebody… 00:36:09:16 00:36:14:11 That´s how everything works in Haiti. That´s also how it works a bit within the MINUSTAH. 00:36:17:03 00:36:20:10 Was sector 8 of the emergency plan during the earthquake in the center? 00:36:22:24 00:36:25:15 Are you looking for a particular spot? 00:36:30:01 00:36:32:14 Jon Brown… 00:36:33:17 00:36:36:24 This is the beginning of Panamerican. 00:36:39:03 00:36:42:10 When you come from Petion Ville it is called Panamerican Avenue. 00:36:43:02 00:36:46:09 From here on it becomes Martin Luther King Street and Jon Brown.. 00:37:08:23 00:37:13:18 Did you see that collapse? Look at the first floor! 00:37:25:01 00:37:28:08 We’ve got this camp, a day center for the elderly 00:37:28:15 00:37:33:01 and in front here we’re building a school for 250 children... 00:37:33:09 00:37:36:16 100 of them will be boarding students. 00:37:37:02 00:37:40:02 We’re working together with our local partners, the "Pau sisters", 00:37:40:06 00:37:42:12 who will be in charge of running the school. 00:37:44:15 00:37:49:19 They’ve created a poultry farm and are carrying out a micro project, 00:37:50:03 00:37:55:07 which consists in buying two goats per family, so that’s 1000 goats for 500 families 00:37:55:17 00:38:00:14 in order to guarantee their daily survival. 00:38:01:02 00:38:05:16 In this camp we take care of 1400 people and give them food on a daily basis. 00:38:06:04 00:38:08:06 So you’re helping them across the board... 00:38:08:14 00:38:10:03 And what do they do? Do they work? 00:38:10:11 00:38:14:23 The elder usually go and earn their daily bread, but don´t ask me what their line of work is. 00:38:15:08 00:38:18:15 In Haiti that’s a mystery to me. I haven’t seen any factories, nor companies. 00:38:22:08 00:38:27:09 The government has no population census, but the priests know their communities. 00:38:28:21 00:38:32:23 They know how many people belong to each family. 00:38:34:16 00:38:39:02 Their knowledge helps us a lot. When it comes time to distribute aid 00:38:39:09 00:38:42:16 its indispensable to know how many people you’re dealing with, 00:38:42:22 00:38:45:13 how many families you can help and the size of each family. 00:38:45:18 00:38:47:10 The priests know exactly who is in their community. 00:38:47:18 00:38:52:23 What kind of support do you get from MINUSTAH and the Haitian government? 00:38:53:11 00:38:56:18 None. There’s no support from them. 00:38:57:11 00:39:02:17 Everything comes from donations. We work with donations from Spain. 00:39:04:18 00:39:09:04 The only support MINUSTAH offers is in security. 00:39:09:19 00:39:13:01 I don´t know if you have seen them. They’re armed to the teeth. 00:39:13:10 00:39:16:17 I think that´s the last thing Haiti needs right now. 00:39:17:13 00:39:20:20 I’m not naive to the situation, I believe security is necessary in this country, 00:39:21:05 00:39:25:10 But there are 16.000 soldiers and they have no positive impact on the population. 00:39:26:18 00:39:30:18 They are all armed and ready for a war against an unseen enemy. 00:39:31:00 00:39:34:07 The biggest threats to Haiti are invisible: disease and oblivion, 00:39:34:19 00:39:39:18 that the world might forget about Haiti, such as has happened during this past year. 00:39:40:03 00:39:42:22 All the help that has come to Haiti has been through NGOs. 00:39:43:03 00:39:48:19 The official organizations and the UN had promised lots of millions for reconstruction. 00:39:49:06 00:39:51:07 For the time being none of that has arrived. 00:39:51:13 00:39:54:10 We suppose that they are waiting for a constitution from a strong government. 00:39:54:20 00:39:57:13 Elections were held in December, we’ll know the results tomorrow. 00:39:57:24 00:40:00:23 There’s political instability, which has its impact on the Haitian people. 00:40:01:08 00:40:03:13 There won’t be any investments made here, 00:40:03:21 00:40:06:13 nobody will dare create enterprises because they don’t know what will happen. 00:40:06:21 00:40:08:07 But I don’t believe that there will be a coup d'etát. 00:40:08:15 00:40:10:11 I do not consider Haitians violent people, 00:40:10:18 00:40:12:23 contrary to what they tried to make us believe in the beginning. 00:40:13:06 00:40:15:17 I have been living here for a year and I haven´t had any problems, ever. 00:40:33:24 00:40:39:00 I’ve noticed that the excessive UN military presence in the streets puts everybody on edge. 00:40:42:06 00:40:46:18 When they increased police presence over the past few days in the center of town, 00:40:47:02 00:40:50:21 Haitians aren’t down with that. 00:40:51:07 00:40:54:23 Seems like, this kind of security is less safe. 00:40:56:23 00:41:01:09 I think the MINUSTAH, the UN lost a unique opportunity in history: 00:41:01:23 00:41:06:03 they could have done something positive for the citizens of the country they’re operating in. 00:41:06:14 00:41:10:01 They’ve ended up doing what they always do: maintain militaries. 00:41:10:13 00:41:15:15 We have transferred soldiers from the third world to a first world lifestyle. 00:41:16:09 00:41:20:21 The soldier camps I have seen have all the comforts you can imagine. 00:41:21:10 00:41:25:01 I think at least some part of what they have should benefit the Haitians. 00:41:25:16 00:41:28:02 As far as I know they haven’t benefitted at all yet. 00:41:28:10 00:41:32:19 You were here from the very start, right after the earthquake and you were rescuing victims. 00:41:33:01 00:41:36:18 If you’ve visited the area behind the cathedral and behind the presidential palace, 00:41:37:03 00:41:39:14 you’d find that area has not been touched yet. 00:41:39:24 00:41:43:02 The bodies are still buried beneath the rubble. Almost nothing has been cleared up. 00:41:43:11 00:41:44:21 Only five percent. 00:41:45:05 00:41:47:16 How have things advanced here? Not at all. 00:41:48:15 00:41:52:21 We have been told that 17 million dollars were invested in the reconstruction of roads. 00:41:53:08 00:41:57:02 Have you seen any improvements? Where are they? 00:41:57:14 00:42:00:09 We’ve been searching for them because we can´t find them! 00:43:50:03 00:43:57:05 If this country can´t solve a problem alone, the UN and the rest of the world, 00:43:57:17 00:44:01:04 just like they help in other situations, should also help in this case. 00:44:01:14 00:44:06:19 The earthquake touched the hearts of people like never before, and people got involved. 00:44:07:08 00:44:11:03 We should be able to see that solidarity reflected in day to day life here. 00:44:24:16 00:44:28:11 On TV they sold us an image, which has nothing to do with reality. 00:44:29:00 00:44:35:00 I think, above all else, Haitians are survivors. 00:45:19:20 00:45:24:02 The first day we were there we took a walk with Turco through a refugee camp. 00:45:24:15 00:45:28:19 We realized when the people saw Turco, they were repelled by him. 00:45:29:07 00:45:32:05 It was like we were walking a lion, instead of a dog. 00:45:35:11 00:45:38:12 Among the toys I brought, I had some plush dogs. 00:45:38:21 00:45:42:12 When I gave them to the children they didn’t want to take them, 00:45:42:16 00:45:45:13 they’d take a step back, until they realized that they were soft. 00:45:51:04 00:45:55:15 In speaking with people about it, we found out, that when people used to work 00:45:56:02 00:46:01:13 on the sugar plantations dogs were used to hunt after people who tried to escape. 00:46:02:00 00:46:07:17 That´s why they still have a bad feeling when they see dogs. 00:46:13:15 00:46:21:18 I want to dream of a new Haiti. Let me believe in a new day, a change. 00:46:25:04 00:46:35:03 From the dignity that you carry within, to the beat of humanity. 00:46:35:24 00:46:42:16 From your misfortune, for each broken dream, I’m going to believe in every grain of sand. 00:46:43:09 00:46:46:10 For every life that’s been drowned, I’m going to dream... 00:46:47:15 00:46:53:00 I was very struck by a man who made beads out of paper from a calendar, 00:46:53:13 00:46:57:01 which were very beautiful. 00:46:57:16 00:47:02:04 We wanted to buy some beads as a souvenir, but there was no way. 00:47:02:23 00:47:06:20 It did not matter what you offered to pay him, the man would not sell his beads, 00:47:07:07 00:47:09:14 they weren’t for sale, even though he was very poor. 00:48:00:19 00:48:05:06 We had looked for Redji’s family in several camps. 00:48:05:17 00:48:09:08 In the end, we found the camp where the family had been living during several months. 00:48:09:20 00:48:13:18 That’s where we were given information about where his family is living now. 00:48:14:08 0:48:19:04 They were living in one of the poorest and 00:48:19:15 00:48:22:21 most conflictive neighborhoods of Port-Au-Prince. 00:48:25:17 00:48:28:07 Oh my god! Thank you! 00:48:30:06 00:48:32:13 Thank you! 00:48:37:06 00:48:39:13 He is my hero! 00:48:55:16 00:48:58:20 Do you know who I am? Not anymore do you? 00:49:02:11 00:49:04:02 He’s grown! 00:49:04:15 00:49:06:22 What’s your name? 00:49:07:23 00:49:12:15 My name is Redji Hausteen Claude 00:49:19:12 00:49:27:24 He’s your friend! He is the one who saved your life. Say "Thank you to him!" 00:49:29:13 00:49:32:05 Is today your birthday? 00:49:35:23 00:49:38:16 How old are you? 00:49:39:08 00:49:41:15 Three years old. 00:50:08:13 00:50:11:22 Due to the emotion of finally finding Redji, seeing the whole family again, 00:50:12:05 00:50:15:20 and Redji’s birthday, we totally forgot about Turco in the car. 00:50:23:14 00:50:27:04 It was moving to see these two survivors together: 00:50:27:16 00:50:29:23 on one hand Redji, on the other hand Turco. 00:50:34:16 00:50:37:12 Redji hugged Turco. Turco licked his hands. 00:50:37:23 00:50:40:05 Redji wasn’t afraid of Turco at all. 00:50:43:20 00:50:49:00 He petted Turco like he’d known him his whole life, like he was his family’s pet. 00:50:49:12 00:50:54:04 He took his leash and if you let him he’d take the dog for a walk. 00:51:33:16 00:51:36:12 Five people died here. 00:51:38:08 00:51:44:00 Redji’s grandfather and my son. I had another son who was 8 years old. 00:51:44:10 00:51:50:00 He also died. And three cousins. 00:51:59:21 00:52:03:10 The last time I came here with my girlfriend, she cried. 00:52:05:06 00:52:08:20 I didn’t know that they had built this wall, because I don’t like coming here. 00:52:09:13 00:52:13:02 Everybody who knows me knows that I don’t like coming here. 00:52:18:00 00:52:24:00 That night my cousin died here in my arms. 00:52:26:14 00:52:33:15 It took us 5 months to dig the dead bodies out and give them a funeral. 00:52:40:18 00:52:44:23 Come here! This is the man who rescued Redji. 00:52:54:16 00:53:03:23 Everyone was so happy when Redji was rescued. Everyone loved him. 00:53:18:18 00:53:24:20 I remember when I took him out everyone was screaming. 00:53:25:02 00:53:27:11 There was such a huge crowd that I could not find my team-mates. 00:53:27:21 00:53:34:14 He was scared. He didn’t understand what was going on. 00:53:44:15 00:53:48:09 I would have liked to see more rebuilt buildings, more things cleared from the rubble. 00:53:48:18 00:53:53:01 Because people are still living under plastic and in tents that were here from day one. 00:53:53:12 00:54:00:19 They’re useful for a week, for a month, but they’re not meant for a family’s day to day life. 00:54:08:09 00:54:18:00 We used to live here Redji, Reginald, his mother and I. Four people. 00:54:20:13 00:54:25:18 We lived here for 3 months. But there wasn’t a tent then, just plastic on the ground. 00:54:26:02 00:54:28:06 And when it started raining you left? 00:54:28:17 00:54:33:00 No, we covered ourselves with a piece of plastic. 00:54:41:15 00:54:45:09 Anniversary of the Earthquake Ceremony Dieu de la derniere heure Church 00:59:57:24 01:00:01:06 I think we’re going in the opposite direction before... 01:00:03:23 01:00:13:09 No, first we were looking for people here, in that one, then we went...all that! 01:00:26:18 01:00:29:00 Is this the boulevard? 01:00:37:14 01:00:40:22 It´s here! Or not? 01:00:41:13 01:00:45:07 I get confused by this green building. 01:00:53:15 01:00:59:12 Pako, I think it´s here. Here is the empty lot. 01:01:10:08 01:01:14:02 We found exactly where the building had been, and it was strange 01:01:14:10 01:01:19:03 to meet someone who had been there the same day when we had tried to rescue the girl. 01:01:19:15 01:01:23:09 He told us the name of the girl. Her name was Gaelle. 01:01:23:23 01:01:26:21 She had been the receptionist at the hotel. 01:01:27:04 01:01:30:23 They got her out on the sixth day. She was already dead. 01:01:31:17 01:01:35:11 No rescue team had gone to save her, as we were told. 01:01:36:06 01:01:41:07 Not a single night goes by that I don’t relive it in my mind, that I don’t remember her. 01:01:41:20 01:01:44:09 That´s something we’ll never forget. 01:01:44:19 01:01:48:22 We talked with her... no, we’ll never forget. 01:01:49:04 01:01:53:18 We are firefighters. We have to see every job through. 01:01:54:00 01:01:58:18 We can´t give up on somebody. We have to continue til’ the end. 01:01:59:04 01:02:03:19 But we left. This will always stay with us… 01:02:08:04 01:02:11:03 For Gaelle 01:02:16:01 01:02:21:02 Gaelle was one of more than 319.000 victims who died in the earthquake in Haiti. Port-au-Prince lost 15% of its population. 01:02:23:08 01:02:26:06 After the earthquake 132 people were saved from the rubble. Redji was one of them. 01:02:26:14 01:02:28:24 10 days after the earthquake the search for survivors had officially ended. 01:02:31:08 01:02:35:14 Pictures of Oscar Vega and Felix del Amo holding Redji in their arms were seen the world over. 01:02:37:14 01:02:43:09 But only the work of 7 firefighters belonging to GEBOCYL and the Fire Department of Madrid, made the rescue possible.
